Pamela BurgessRadiant Light: Shadow Drawings of California Native PlantsThis has been an amazing journey. As Theodore Payne Foundation's first Artist-in-Residence, I have made new friends, discovered new directions for my work, and learned how to pronounce the word, Matilija. On view in the gallery is a selection of work produced during my residency: a collection of drawings, collages, journal pages and found natural material from the gardens. Each image in the exhibition represents the shadow cast by a California native plant and captures a moment in time - the transitory nature of life. They are intended to express a kind of serenity similar to a direct experience of nature. My drawing process begins in the field by tracing the outline of a shadow of a plant. I capture the shadow in situ without harming the flora. I draw quickly, as the sun is moving fast across the sky. I am not concerned with botanical accuracy, as mine is an interpretive art. Each drawing develops after I return to the studio and allow my imagination to take over. Thank you John Wickham, President of Theodore Payne, for giving me this opportunity, and thanks to the staff who have been generous with their time and knowledge: Kristen, Margaret, Lili, Kathy, Lisa, Louise, Madena, Layla, and Ed. This is truly a magical place. Pamela Burgess Artist-in-Residence Theodore Payne Foundation April 1 - December 31, 2008
